A Complete Guide for Indian PTE Aspirants
PTE 79+ in all four communicative skills (Superior English) is required for 20 additional points in Australia's skilled migration points test. It is also the target for most top-ranking universities and Canada Express Entry CLB 10+. Here are section-by-section strategies from BSL's Pearson Bronze certified instructors.
Most Indian test-takers who score below 79 do so in Speaking and Writing — not Reading or Listening. These two sections have the most specific technique requirements. BSL's live 1-on-1 sessions focus heavily on the highest-impact question types in each section.
Read Aloud contributes to both Speaking AND Reading scores. Reading the passage aloud with proper word stress, clear pronunciation, and natural pacing can single-handedly improve your overall score by 5 to 10 points. Indian students commonly make three specific errors: over-stressing syllables, flat intonation, and pausing mid-sentence at the wrong point. BSL instructors correct these patterns using the AI speaking evaluation criteria directly.
Repeat Sentence requires repeating exactly what you hear. The most common Indian test-taker error is paraphrasing or simplifying. If you heard "The committee has not yet reached a consensus on the proposed amendments", say exactly that — do not say "The committee has not agreed on the changes yet". Paraphrasing loses both Speaking and Listening marks. This requires concentrated listening practice with specific short-term memory techniques that BSL instructors teach systematically.
The PTE Write Essay is scored by AI on five criteria: content, form, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Band 79+ essays need 200 to 300 words, clear paragraph structure with a minimum of three body paragraphs, a range of grammatical structures, accurate spelling (AI penalises every spelling error), and vocabulary that is precise and varied. Indian students often write short essays (under 200 words) with vocabulary that is accurate but not varied. BSL Writing sessions focus on word-length discipline and vocabulary upgrading.
Write From Dictation is the last Listening question type but contributes to both Listening AND Writing scores. Each correctly spelled word earns one mark. Missing or misspelling words costs marks in two sections simultaneously. Indian students who struggle with English spelling (particularly academic vocabulary like "bureaucracy", "pharmaceutical", "coincidence") consistently score below 79 in both Writing and Listening. Specific Write From Dictation word-list drilling is a core BSL PTE technique.
Re-order Paragraphs requires placing 4 to 5 text boxes in logical order. The technique: find the independent box first (the one that does not refer back to any other with pronouns like "this", "these", "it"). This is almost always the opening sentence. Then chain the remaining boxes using pronoun-antecedent relationships and logical transitions. Indian students who approach this task by reading all options first waste time and lose confidence. BSL teaches the two-pass systematic technique.
Summarise Spoken Text requires listening to a 60-90 second audio and writing a summary of 50 to 70 words. The AI scores content, form, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. The technique: take structured notes on the scratch paper during the audio using abbreviations. Identify: topic, main point, one or two supporting details. Write the summary using these notes without trying to transcribe sentences verbatim. Indian students who try to listen and memorise sentences in English lose the overall meaning and score poorly on content.
PTE Academic is approximately 2 hours total: Speaking and Writing section 77-93 minutes, Reading section 32-41 minutes, Listening section 45-57 minutes. The Speaking and Writing section has a timed break midway. Time per question type: Read Aloud 35-40 seconds per text, Write Essay 20 minutes maximum, Summarise Written Text 10 minutes, Re-order Paragraphs 2-3 minutes per task. The most common reason Indian test-takers miss Band 79 is spending too long on Write Essay and rushing Re-order Paragraphs. BSL timed practice sessions build the right discipline.
PTE AI scoring is highly predictable once you understand the algorithm. Unlike IELTS (where a human examiner may be lenient), the PTE AI is completely consistent. This is an advantage: if you know exactly what the AI penalises, you can eliminate those errors systematically. The AI penalises: disfluencies in Speaking (um, er, false starts), every spelling error in Writing, grammar errors (particularly tense inconsistency), and content omissions in Summarise tasks.
